Organization

Mwema Street Children Center-Karatu is a registered national NGO under the regulations of the Ministry of Health Community development, Gender, Elders and Children since October 2007 with the registration number 00NGO/1216. Mwema promotes children’s rights and carries out welfare, educational and preventative work for children who are living on the street and for those at risk of social exclusion through their Programs.

Our Mission

Mwema is providing support to the most vulnerable children of Karatu Town and surroundings through the residential Centre for street children, Memkwa Education for school dropouts children and those who didn’t get a chance to school at all, basic health education for those children still living at the streets, sponsorship for those children that access to Complimentary Basic Education Tanzania (COBET), primary school, Secondary school, Vocational training, College and University to date.

Achievements

  • Since the founding of Mwema we helped approximately 610 children.
  • Approximately a number of 480 cases have gone back to their families and continue with their normal life. Some stays at Mwema after completing their education levels. Some did not manage to stay so they run away again.
  • Every year we have 3- 5 students graduating from Secondary school, an approximately 36 children have graduated from Secondary school and joined with High school, vocational training collages and University.
  • 7 are at the collage, 1 at the university and 2 at vocational training.

Children living in the streets do not need gifts, they need EDUCATION!
